Ways to Play Iowa Pick 4

While most lotteries have one set way to play, Pick 4 has several wager types. You can choose either a Straight, Box, Straight/Box or a Pair play (Front Pair or Back Pair). Find out more about each play type below.

Straight
Straight

This is a prediction that your chosen numbers will be drawn in that exact order. It's the hardest play type to win, but the payout is 6,000 times your wager amount.

Box
Box

For a Box play, you win if all four of your selected numbers are drawn. The order is irrelevant, so if you play 2468 and the numbers are drawn as 8642, you still win.

Straight/Box
Straight/Box

Half your wager amount goes on a Straight and half on a Box. You win the full prize if your numbers appear in order, or the Box part of the payout if they are drawn another way.

Comboo
Combo

Every combination of your numbers is entered as a separate Straight. This means you can still win the same prize as a Straight, while you also have the same good odds as a Box. The trade-off is that you have to pay for each combination, so the cost is between $4 and $24.

Pair Plays

You don't have to match four numbers! Try to match just the first two digits (Front Pair) or the last two digits (Back Pair). To win, you need both numbers in the correct position.

4-Way To 24-Way

If you play a Box or a Straight/Box, each play is also subcategorised depending on how many of your numbers are the same. Each combination of numbers can be defined as being 4-Way, 6-Way, 12-Way or 24-Way.

The table below gives you a description for each way to play, as well as an example. You can also use the generator tool to see which combinations would win for any set of numbers, based on your play type.
